description: "A faithful capture of Dell's 1996 direct-commerce homepage — a table-based, bitmap-heavy layout that treats the browser as a print brochure. The palette is a deliberately bold trio: cadmium red for urgency banners, a muted olive-green strip for product category headers, and a dusky slate-blue background on product cells, all sitting on a pure white page canvas. Type is browser-default Times at small body scale with no custom tracking — the voice is the era's web, not a typographer's hand. Every navigation element is a GIF image-map; no CSS border-radius exists; nothing is pill-shaped. The product grid is a two-column table of image-and-label rows, each row separated by a visible 1 px rule. This is direct-mail catalogue design ported to HTML 3.2."

## Overview
Dell's December 1996 homepage is a textbook specimen of early commercial web design — not a stylesheet-driven system but a handcrafted HTML table structure where every navigational element is a rasterised GIF and every layout decision is encoded in `<TD>` attributes. The page treats the browser window as a two-column direct-mail piece: the left column is a grid of icon tiles linking to buying, support, company, and government verticals; the right column is a stacked catalogue of product-family rows. There is no CSS cascade to speak of — the extracted system defaults to the browser's own Times Roman at 12 px and `#0000ee` link blue.
What gives the page its visual identity is not typography but colour blocking. Three opinionated fill tones carry all the weight: a saturated cadmium red (`{colors.promo-band-bg}`) reserved exclusively for urgency surfaces — the "Buy a Dell" header banner, the phone-number strip, the sidebar promotional blurb; a desaturated olive-green (`{colors.category-header-bg}`) that runs as a category-header band across every product row (Dimension Desktops, Optiplex, Latitude, PowerEdge, Dellware); and a muted slate-teal (`{colors.product-cell-bg}`) filling the product description cells immediately below each header. On top of pure white canvas, this three-colour blocking reads clearly at 800×600 — the resolution target of the era.
Navigation is entirely icon-driven. The left sidebar is a 2×3 grid of GIF tiles — "Online Store", "Service and Support", "Why Dell?", "Government / Healthcare / Education", "Worldwide Contacts", "Order Status", "Company Information", "U.S. Careers" — each accompanied by a small arrow-tailed text link below it. There are no hover states, no JavaScript, no transitions. The bottom of the page repeats a horizontal icon strip (Find, Home, Online Store, Service & Support) as a persistent footer navigation. The entire site is optimised for Netscape 3.0.
**Key Characteristics:**
- Zero border-radius anywhere. Every container is a hard-cornered rectangle. The `{rounded.none}` token is the only radius token in this system.
- Colour blocks do the navigation work that hover states and shadows would do in a modern system — red means buy, olive means category, slate means description.
- Type is browser-native Times at 10–14 px. The only "designed" type is set in GIF images (the "BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER. ONLINE." masthead and the category-row labels are all bitmap text).
- The sidebar promotional box is a red-fill table cell with white bold Times italic copy — the era's equivalent of a hero CTA band.
- Image-map GIFs carry all icon and badge work; no SVG, no icon font.
## Colors
### Brand
- **Primary Red** (`{colors.primary-red}` — `#cc0000`): The brand's single conversion colour. Used on the masthead "BUY a DELL" badge, the phone-number strip, and the sidebar promotional box. Every urgency and commerce surface is this red.
- **Primary Blue** (`{colors.primary-blue}` — `#0000cc`): The saturated blue visible in the "BUY a DELL" GIF badge lettering. Not used as a background anywhere; exists only as logotype / badge type colour.
- **Nav Icon Blue** (`{colors.nav-icon-blue}` — `#003399`): The deeper navy used in the globe and navigation icon GIFs in the left sidebar.
- **Yellow Accent** (`{colors.yellow-accent}` — `#cccc00`): The bright yellow-gold background of the "BUY a DELL" badge tile in the masthead strip.
### Surface
- **Canvas** (`{colors.canvas}` — `#ffffff`): The page background and nav-sidebar background. Every non-coloured area is pure white.
- **Category Header Bg** (`{colors.category-header-bg}` — `#8b9b6b`): The olive-green fill on every product-family header row — Dimension Desktops, Optiplex Desktops, Latitude Notebooks, PowerEdge Servers, Dellware. This is the page's secondary dominant colour.
- **Product Cell Bg** (`{colors.product-cell-bg}` — `#8b9b9b`): The muted slate-teal fill on the product description cells immediately below each category header. Together with the olive header, this two-tone pair defines the product grid rhythm.
- **Promo Band Bg** (`{colors.promo-band-bg}` — `#cc0000`): Same hex as primary-red. Used as a table-cell background fill for the sidebar promo box and the masthead commerce strip.
### Text
- **Ink** (`{colors.ink}` — `#000000`): All body text on light and coloured surfaces.
- **On Primary** (`{colors.on-primary}` — `#ffffff`): Text on red surfaces — the sidebar promo box copy, the phone number strip.
- **Mute** (`{colors.mute}` — `#666666`): Estimated for de-emphasised footer secondary text.
- **Footer Text** (`{colors.footer-text}` — `#000000`): The copyright and terms-of-use line at the page bottom.
### Semantic / Links
- **Link** (`{colors.link}` — `#0000ee`): Browser-default hyperlink blue. Every text-based nav label and inline link uses this colour.
- **Link Visited** (`{colors.link-visited}` — `#551a8b`): Browser-default visited-link purple. Preserved as a documented token because in 1996 this distinction was the only persistent navigation state the page offered.
- **Hairline** (`{colors.hairline}` — `#999999`): Approximate colour of the 1 px table borders separating rows in the product grid.
## Typography
### Font Family
Two families carry the entire system — and neither is a deliberate design choice; both are browser defaults for the era:
1. **Times / Times New Roman (serif)**: The default document body face for Netscape Navigator 3.0 on Windows and Mac. Every paragraph, nav label, caption, and link label renders in Times at the browser's default scale (~12 px). No custom size or weight is specified by the site's own HTML for body text — the browser sets it.
2. **Arial / Helvetica (sans-serif)**: Appears in GIF-rendered headline text (the masthead "BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER. ONLINE." and the category-row labels like "DIMENSION DESKTOPS"). These are bitmapped images, not live text — but the face visible in the GIFs is a condensed grotesque consistent with Arial Bold.
No custom typeface is loaded. No `@font-face`, no webfont. The typography system is entirely the browser's rendering engine.
### Hierarchy
| Token | Size | Weight | Line Height | Letter Spacing | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| `{typography.display-xl}` | 18px | 700 | 22px | 1px | Masthead headline GIF ("BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER. ONLINE.") — bitmap, not live. |
| `{typography.display-lg}` | 14px | 700 | 18px | 1px | Category-row header labels ("DIMENSION DESKTOPS", "OPTIPLEX DESKTOPS") — bitmap GIF text. |
| `{typography.display-md}` | 12px | 700 | 16px | 0px | Badge labels ("BUY a DELL"), phone-strip label. |
| `{typography.body-lg}` | 14px | 400 | 20px | 0px | Sidebar promo box body copy — the largest live Times text on the page. |
| `{typography.body-md}` | 12px | 400 | 16px | 0px | Default browser body text. Product description lines, nav labels. |
| `{typography.body-md-strong}` | 12px | 700 | 16px | 0px | Bold inline phrases within product cells ("Reliable PCs", "PCs optimized"). |
| `{typography.body-sm}` | 11px | 400 | 14px | 0px | Tight small print in nav icon labels. |
| `{typography.caption}` | 10px | 400 | 13px | 0px | Footer copyright line and "best viewed with browser versions 3.0" note. |
| `{typography.button-md}` | 12px | 700 | 16px | 0px | Arrow-link labels below nav icon tiles ("Online Store →", "Order Status →"). |
| `{typography.nav-label}` | 11px | 400 | 14px | 0px | The small text label beneath each sidebar icon GIF. |
### Principles
- **No typographic design decisions exist at the CSS layer.** Every styling choice is either baked into a GIF or inherited from the browser default. This is the defining typographic characteristic of this system.
- **Bitmap type carries all the display work.** The category headers and masthead headline are images — spacing, weight, and tracking were set by whoever created the GIF, not by a stylesheet.
- **Bold inline phrases are the emphasis system.** Within the olive/slate product cells, the first phrase of each description is bolded ("Reliable PCs for high performance computing", "Dependable notebooks with superior battery life") — this is the page's only hierarchy inside body copy.
- **Uppercase is the category-label convention.** Every product family name in the grid header reads in all-caps ("DIMENSION DESKTOPS", "LATITUDE NOTEBOOKS") — this is the bitmap GIF's letterform, not a CSS `text-transform`.
## Layout
### Spacing System
- **Base unit**: No systematic base unit exists. Table `cellpadding` and `cellspacing` attributes handle all internal spacing — typically 2–4 px for cell padding and 2 px for cell spacing.
- **Tokens**: `{spacing.xxs}` 2 px · `{spacing.xs}` 4 px · `{spacing.sm}` 6 px · `{spacing.md}` 8 px · `{spacing.lg}` 12 px · `{spacing.xl}` 16 px · `{spacing.2xl}` 24 px · `{spacing.3xl}` 32 px · `{spacing.4xl}` 48 px.
- **Cell padding**: Product grid cells use `{spacing.cell-pad}` 4 px internal padding. The sidebar nav icon tiles use `{spacing.xs}` 4 px.
- **Section spacing**: There is no vertical section spacing system — rows are flush-butted table rows with `cellspacing="2"` providing the only gap.
### Grid & Container
- **Overall layout**: A two-column HTML table. Left column ≈ 190 px wide (nav sidebar); right column ≈ 370 px wide (product grid). Total page width ≈ 600 px — sized for the era's 640×480 and 800×600 viewport.
- **Left column**: A 2-column sub-table of icon tiles, arranged in three rows of two tiles each, with text-link labels beneath each tile.
- **Right column**: A stacked sequence of two-cell table rows — each product family consists of one full-width olive header row followed by one full-width slate description+image row.
- **Footer strip**: A single-row table of four icon tiles (Find, Home, Online Store, Service & Support) centred below the product grid.
- **Max width**: No max-width constraint. The page renders at fixed table widths, approximately 600 px total.
### Whitespace Philosophy
There is no whitespace philosophy — whitespace is a side-effect of table cell padding. The design packs content as densely as the table model allows. The only "breathing room" is the 2 px `cellspacing` gap between table cells, which also renders as a faint grid of background-colour seams between the olive/slate blocks. The sidebar promo box uses `{spacing.lg}` 12 px padding to give the red-box italic copy some internal margin — this is the most generous spacing on the page.
## Elevation & Depth
| Level | Treatment | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Level 0 — Flat | No shadow, no border — hard cell edges only. | All surfaces. This is the only level. |
| Level 1 — Table Rule | 1 px solid `{colors.hairline}` visible as table border seam. | Separates product rows and nav tile grid. |
The 1996 Dell page has no elevation system. There are no box-shadows, no `z-index` stacking, no layered surfaces. Depth is communicated entirely through colour-block contrast — red reads in front of white; olive reads as a header because it precedes the slate description cell. That is the full depth model.
## Shapes
### Border Radius Scale
| Token | Value | Use |
|---|---|---|
| `{rounded.none}` | 0px | Every element on the page. No radius is used anywhere. |
The entire site is hard-cornered. GIF badges, table cells, the promo box, every container — all are sharp rectangles. This is structural, not a choice: HTML 3.2 table-based layout has no border-radius concept. Any rendering of this brand that introduces rounded corners is anachronistic.
## Components
### Navigation
**`nav-sidebar`** — the left-column two-by-three icon grid that carries the primary navigation.
- White background, Times 11 px label text below each GIF icon, internal padding `{spacing.sm}`. No borders, no hover state — the GIF itself IS the button.
**`nav-icon-tile`** — a single icon GIF + arrow-label link unit inside the sidebar grid.
- White background, navy icon GIF above, `{typography.nav-label}` label below, no radius, tight `{spacing.xs}` pad. The arrow (→) is part of the label text.
**`nav-icon-label`** — the small hyperlinked text beneath each icon tile.
- Text colour `{colors.link}`, `{typography.nav-label}`, underline decoration. The only interactive affordance aside from the GIF itself.
**`footer-icon-strip`** — the four-icon repeat of Find / Home / Online Store / Service & Support at the bottom of the product grid.
- White background, centred, `{spacing.sm} {spacing.xl}` padding. Mirrors the sidebar icon vocabulary at page-bottom.
**`footer-bar`** — the copyright and terms line.
- White background, `{typography.caption}`, `{colors.footer-text}`. Two text nodes: "Copyright 1996 Dell Computer Corporation. All rights reserved." and "Terms of Use" as an inline link.
### Masthead & Commerce
**`masthead-banner`** — the full-width top bar reading "BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER. ONLINE. Click here to buy a Dell right now."
- White background, bitmap GIF headline, `{typography.display-xl}`, `{spacing.xs} {spacing.md}` padding. The right side of this bar carries the `buy-a-dell-badge` and `phone-cta` elements.
**`buy-a-dell-badge`** — the yellow-background "BUY a DELL" logo tile embedded in the masthead.
- Background `{colors.yellow-accent}`, text `{colors.primary-blue}`, `{typography.display-md}`, `{spacing.xs}` pad, `{rounded.none}`. A GIF logotype, not live text.
**`phone-cta`** — the red strip carrying "1-800-213-DELL" to the right of the badge.
- Background `{colors.promo-band-bg}`, text `{colors.on-primary}`, `{typography.display-md}`, `{spacing.xs} {spacing.md}` pad.
**`promo-band`** — the masthead's top line ("BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER. ONLINE.") treated as a distinct promotional banner when it appears as a standalone strip.
- Background `{colors.canvas}`, headline in bitmap GIF.
### Product Grid
**`product-category-row`** — the olive-green header row for each product family.
- Background `{colors.category-header-bg}`, text `{colors.category-header-text}`, `{typography.display-lg}` (bitmap), `{spacing.xs} {spacing.md}` padding, `{rounded.none}`. Product family name in all-caps GIF text; a product photograph occupies the right half of the row.
**`product-cell`** — the slate-teal description cell immediately below each category header.
- Background `{colors.product-cell-bg}`, text `{colors.ink}`, `{typography.body-md-strong}` for the bold lead phrase + `{typography.body-md}` for the remainder, `{spacing.cell-pad} {spacing.md}` padding. Example: "**Reliable PCs** for high performance computing."
**`product-grid`** — the outer wrapper table that stacks all product-category-row + product-cell pairs.
- Background `{colors.canvas}`, `{spacing.sm}` internal spacing between rows.
### Sidebar
**`sidebar-promo-box`** — the red-fill copy block in the left column below the icon grid.
- Background `{colors.promo-band-bg}`, text `{colors.on-primary-red}`, `{typography.body-md-strong}` in italic, `{spacing.lg}` internal padding, `{rounded.none}`. Copy reads: "At Dell.com, we'll help you find the right system, configure it, price it, and order it — backed up by the best service and support in the business."
### Inline
**`link-inline`** — body-copy inline hyperlinks.
- Text `{colors.link}`, `{typography.body-md}`, underlined. Visited state resolves to `{colors.link-visited}`.
**`section-divider`** — the 1 px table-border seam between product rows.
- Border `{colors.hairline}`, height 1 px. Rendered by the browser's table `border` attribute, not CSS.
## Do's and Don'ts
### Do
- Use `{colors.promo-band-bg}` red exclusively for commerce and urgency surfaces — the "buy" action, the phone number, the promotional blurb. It is the single conversion colour.
- Use `{colors.category-header-bg}` olive as a category / section-header fill and nowhere else. The two-tone pairing of olive header + slate cell IS the product-grid visual system.
- Keep all containers hard-cornered at `{rounded.none}`. Any radius is historically incorrect and visually foreign.
- Render display text as images (GIF or equivalent bitmap) if reproducing the period aesthetic — the masthead and category labels are bitmap type, not live text.
- Use `{typography.body-md-strong}` for the lead phrase in product descriptions — the bold-first-phrase pattern is the page's only typographic hierarchy inside content.
- Preserve browser-default `{colors.link}` `#0000ee` and `{colors.link-visited}` `#551a8b` for all hyperlinks — these are the navigation affordance system.
### Don't
- Don't introduce border-radius. Not on buttons, not on cards, not on badges. This system has no radius concept.
- Don't add hover states, transitions, or shadows. The page's interaction model is click-only; visual feedback is absent by design.
- Don't introduce a webfont. The system's typographic identity — such as it is — depends on the browser's default Times serif. Substituting a webfont would misrepresent the era.
- Don't reuse the red (`{colors.promo-band-bg}`) on non-commerce surfaces. In this system red means "buy" and nothing else; diluting it breaks the only visual hierarchy the page has.
- Don't introduce a grid wider than ~600 px. The layout is sized for 800×600 displays; stretching to modern viewport widths breaks the proportional relationship between the left nav column and the product grid.
- Don't letter-space body text positively or negatively — no tracking was specified and the browser default is what the brand sounds like.Preview from tokens
